Salt-Free Water Conditioners Explained

May 24, 2015

With all of the water treatment systems that we offer, we are constantly asked about the difference between water softeners and salt-free water conditioners. There are some differences but both water systems are effective at doing their job. Water Softening is the act of reducing or eliminating dissolved calcium and magnesium hardness minerals from the water. The process is called ion exchange and uses a polymer resin bed which gives off a sodium particle in exchange for hardness minerals. Calcium and magnesium are called “hard minerals” which cause scaling and are resistant to soap.

Water conditioning with a salt-free water conditioner is different in that with the salt-free process minerals are retained in the water, but their form is changed so they will not adhere to surfaces. When the hardness minerals are converted to a hardness crystal that is not able to bind to surfaces, this is what is known as water conditioning, not softening. The hardness is still there, but it can no longer adhere to surfaces causing scaling or buildup within pipes and water-using appliances. You may see less soap usage and possibly brighter laundry. The main benefit you receive from a salt free system is the maintenance free aspect. No electricity, no waste water, and no salt or dangerous chemicals.
