How Much is Too Much Chlorine?

Oct 15, 2012

There are a number of things out there that can make us sick, but drinking water should never be one of them. But even here in the United States with one of the most advanced drinking water sources in the world, we face many issues due to the drinking water issues that residents face all over the country. In fact, right here in Ventura County, one resident is making claims that too much chlorine in their home’s drinking water is making them sick. According to an article from CBSLA.com, one Ojai family said the smell and presence of the chlorine was extremely strong and felt a negative impact on her well-being from the water.

Chlorine is added to drinking water with a purpose. According to some statistics, the U.S. General Accounting Office reports that there are serious deficiencies in water treatment plants in 75% of the states in this country.  More than 120 million people (about 50% of the population) may get unsafe water according to a study conducted by the Natural Resources Defense Council. Chlorination of drinking water was a major factor in the reduction of deaths associated with waterborne pathogens, and was believed to be safe. But current research shows that too much chlorine could also cause harm with some places even looking at alternate solutions.

The residents tested their drinking water for chlorine much like they test a swimming pool. The levels were really high and what they would have expected for the pool but certainly not their drinking water. The family started to use filtered water for brushing their teeth. They also started to drink bottled water. A representative with Golden State Water Company, which supplies water to the family, said they are state-mandated to disinfect the water with chlorine and ammonia. As the article states, “Some scientists believe ingesting water with high levels of chlorine can cause cancer, but it’s impossible to know whether the levels are high enough to pose a risk to the Arellanes family.”

Not only are plastic water bottles environmentally-irresponsible, but they are costly and do not replace safe drinking water like all residents deserve.
