Groundwater Awareness Week 2013

Mar 11, 2013

Many homeowners take their drinking water for granted and are not as aware as they could be of the source of their drinking water. National Groundwater Awareness Week is from March 10-16 and is the perfect time for you to get involved. Groundwater is the main source of drinking water and is essential to the health and well-being of a community and its environment. Whether you have a public drinking water system or a private well, groundwater is a vital resource that we cannot spare, waste, or ignore. The process of creating safe drinking water means having plenty of groundwater from our sources and as many Californians know, we cannot waste this resource when there isn’t as much as there should be in the first place.

As a drinking water company, we are completely committed to preserving this vital resource. Groundwater is the water that soaks into the soil from rain or other precipitation and moves downward to fill cracks and other openings in beds of rocks and sand. It is, therefore, a renewable resource, although renewal rates vary greatly according to environmental conditions. For example, here in California according to a recent article from the Sacramento Bee, “California is poised to shatter an all-time weather record by notching the driest January-February period in recorded history across the northern Sierra Nevada. The northern Sierra is crucial to statewide water supplies because it is where snowmelt accumulates to fill Shasta and Oroville reservoirs. These are the largest reservoirs in California and the primary storage points for state and federal water supply systems.”

The best thing that National Groundwater Awareness Week can do for Californians is to bring about the awareness of drinking water in general and our need to conserve water sources, utilize groundwater sources, and encourage citizens to purchase a drinking water system which provides water that is safer, healthier and great-tasting to drink.
